Without any fanfare, Ed Davenport has quietly become one of the most respected producers working in underground dance music.
Firmly ensconced in his adopted hometown of Berlin, the young Brit has slowly yet surely carved out a niche that is all his own. The recent launch of his own Counterchange Recordings imprint and his highly regarded production and DJ alter ego Inland, both represent the undeniable maturing of Davenport as an artist. Driven by a sense of the timelessness of great music, Ed continues to hone a sound that is at once emotional, engaging, and expansive.
Having cut his teeth on the London scene and released a handful of well-received 12s, it was his move to Berlin in 2008 that afforded Ed the creative space to fully develop his potential. Holed up in his then home-studio, a string of productions on Liebe Detail, Falkplatz, Vidab and Autoreply heralded his emergence as a talent to watch, while forging important production partnerships with key Berlin figures like Oliver Deutschmann.
Arriving in Berlin also saw Mr Davenport begin his long running and mutually beneficial relationship with Berlin techno institution Berghain. Playing the first of countless sets at Panorama Bar in 2008, Ed has gone on to become a regular on both floors. His DJing displays an innate sense of drama and control, effortlessly blending timeless house and techno from across the decades into his tightly wound, hypnotic sets. His intuitive skills and affable, gentlemanly persona have endeared him to dancers and promoter alike.
Yet it is in the studio where Ed's heart truly lies. A fruitful relationship with Nick Harris's NRK began in 2011, and after 3 singles (including the massive 'More Red Lights') culminated in the release of the highly accomplished 'Counterchange' LP. Merging influences from classic techno, house, and broken beat, this assured debut combines a steely edge with a sensitive melancholia, conceptually inspired by Ed's background in graphic design. The album launch at Panorama Bar and his triumphant take on the prestigious RA podcast a few months earlier, cemented Ed's status as a producer and DJ of lasting caliber.
Having built a new studio with fellow producer Patrik Skoog (a.k.a Agaric), 2013 has seen the launch of 'Counterchange Recordings' and Ed's richest musical experience yet. Inland's exceptional 'Solstice' marks the label's first official release, with Nubian Mindz, Force/Emerge, Aardvarck and Hamburg-Berlin electronic duo Circuit Diagram all waiting in the wings.
It is the Inland moniker that is trusted with presenting Ed's ever more nuanced, and confidant music. Releases on Len Faki's Figure SPC and a vinyl only 12'' on VidabX also emerged - seeing the man reveling in a harder edge - finding a purity and dynamic freedom at higher tempos. With recent appearances performing extended sets at Berghain and debuting Inland's emotional, atmospheric techno as a live show, it's clear Ed Davenport's mission to represent quality, timeless music is only just beginning.
